In late 2022, Edward Sol sent several images of Kyiv when the city was under fire from Russian attacks. Despite these images' gruesome backgrounds, they are also beautiful, and I kept looking at them. Of course, as a middle-aged man born in The Netherlands, I never experienced war and only know it from stories from my mother, from her childhood days, experiencing Nijmegen as a frontline city in the winter of 1944-45. I can't imagine what living during bombardment is like to be in hiding. I started two pieces of music, thinking about decay and destruction, of lives interrupted and nobody asked for it. Much of my equipment is old: Walkmans, reel-to-reel machines and Dictaphone. I also used an iPad and a laptop for the final mix. I've added shortwave radio sounds to create a kind of radio drama about the atrocities of wars, not just this one, but any war.
When I was done (I created three pieces, the third of which is to come on a 3"CDR called 'Disabuse Transmissions'), Love Earth Music expressed interest in releasing this, and I asked Edward Sol permission to use the photographs. However, it wasn't him, but Serhiy Ristenko who took this and whose Facebook timeline shows many great pictures of regular daily life in Ukraine. He's also a soldier at the frontline. He permitted me to use them, and LEM released this on an LP, which works best for these photos. It's the first LP by Modelbau (discounting a very limited Lathe cut and the collaboration with Scanner), and I am proud of this. I know that's what every musician says about their work, so there you go. I rank this as one of the best works I did as Modelbau.
